Although the title page names the viol with apparent reference to the entire work, an independent part for the viol is found only in this Sonate III Quatuor.
The four parts of this sonata are labelled «Flûte Seule», «Violon Seul», «Viole» and «Violoncello». The part of the ‘cello is unfigured, quite differently from the other bass parts in this book. Given the title of the work and the label of the first part book («Violino Primo»), the substitution of flute for violin was certainly conceded. An instrumentation with the two flûtes traversières of the title at the two upper parts is also conceivable; both parts have a few notes below the range of the flute which anyway require an adjustment.
