The part for solo bass instrument bears the indication "viola" without further specification; however, since it is written entirely in bass clef, comparing the title a 3 Violins, Viola di Gamba e Basso Continuo of a manuscript copy from the Selhof, Nicolas, Catalogue d’une très belle bibliothèque de livres, Den Haag, Moetjens, 1759 (edizione facsimile: Amsterdam, Knuf, 1973). catalogue, and bearing in mind the composer's predilection, it seems clear that it is intended for viola da gamba.
