Finger, Gottfried (Godfrey) (attributed)
7 suites for viol and viola baryton (RI 79-85)
D-SÜN ms. 12, suites n° 1-7
Güntersberg
A third part for bass, copied in score with the baryton, is most certainly for the pizzicato register of the baryton; it is less probable that it is intended for a separate bass instrument.
Due to the scordatura, the two parts are written in different keys.
In suite 7 a change from minor to major key causes Flassig F., Die solistische Gambenmusik in Deutschland im 18. Jahrhundert, Göttingen, Cuvillier Verlag, 1998 and RISM to consider the last two movements as independent.
In the Paßagalia of Suite No. 7 it is clear from both an inscription on the viola da gamba part and a change of writing in the baryton part that the baryton player must, during the piece, either change the tuning of the instrument or switch to the soprano viola.
The manuscript is anonymous; the composer has been identified thanks to some concordances with manuscripts in GB-Ob (Flassig-1998).
