In the ms. US-NH, a collection of organ music, the sonata is notated on two staffs and one line in German tablature for the pedal; the second staff bears the inscription «Viol d Gamb:». By this is probably meant an alternative instrumentation for viola da gamba and organ obbligato.A different scribe added «Box de Hou» under the title, a variant of the name Buxtehude that recurs frequently in this manuscript. The work might be the transcription of an original sonata for violin, viola da gamba and bc by Buxtehude.
In D-W, the instrumental indication Viola di Gamba is not found in the title of the sonata, but rather in the corresponding index entry.
