The same book, with substantial modifications, appeared in many editions: in 1665 under the title The Principles of Practical Musick ; from 1667 until 1775 under the title A compendium of Practical Musick . Only the 1665 and 1678 editions include pieces for viols.
The book also contains 15 Short and easie Ayres designed for Learners , for treble and bass, without specific instrumentation.
