The hypothesis for the dating of the first edition is based on the fact that the dedicatee Adam von und zu Diamantstein was promoted from Baron to Graf in march 1706 (see EDM edition, p. 111); that of the second edition on the Catalogue Le Clerc published within it. The second edition is certainly based on the first since it even bears its dedication, with the old title Baron.
Sonatas I, II, III, V and some movements of sonata VI are found also in the Viennese manuscript A-Wn Mus. Hs.16598.
The scorings of the six sonatas in the print are, as indicated in the title: sonatas I and II, viola da gamba and bc; sonatas III and IV, viola da gamba and bc ad libitum, sonatas V and VI, viola da gamba sola. The last movement of sonata II have a second obligato bass part for an unspecified bass instrument.
