With the instruction at the beginning of the cantata «L’air suivant se joue sur le Clavecin, ou sur la Viole avant que la Voix le chante» Monteclair requires an instrumental introduction in which the viol or harpsichord replaces the voice. In the rest of the cantata neither the viol nor the harpsichord are no more mentioned and evidently play tacitly the basso continuo. It is therefor probably that the viol is of bass size and has to transpose the vocal part (written for soprano, in soprano clef) an octave lower.
