On the title page, the instrumentation is described as follows: «Person: Christi mit 2 Violdig over Bratz: Persona Evangelist mit 2 Bratz:» but the situation is actually reversed and the violas da gamba accompany the Evangelist.
The viols play also in the Chorus sections.
The sizes of the 2 viols are not specified; in reason of the ranges it may be 2 bass viols or tenor and bass viol.
