This is a sonata for violin and bass by Benda, transposed here an octave lower for the viola da gamba, but without any real adaptation to the instrument; some chords and arpeggio passages, idiomatic for the violin, are left unchanged and are unplayable on the viola da gamba.
The original for violin and bc is preserved in two manuscripts; in D-Dl (https://opac.rism.info/search?id=212002776&View=rism, copyist Pisendel) and S-Skma (https://opac.rism.info/search?id=190009847&View=rism).
The copyist of the version for viola da gamba is Johannes Ringk.
The version for viola da gamba was in turn transcribed by Carl Friedrich Zelter for viola da braccio. On this transcription the sonata is erroneously attributed to Johann Gottlieb Graun.
