The first two parts of this book are for viola da gamba and b. c., while the third part is entitled Pièces a trois violes, although the part of the third viol is presented as a normal basso continuo. Regarding the instrumentation of these Pieces a trois violes Marais informs us in his Avertissment that, in the absence of the two bass viols, they can also be performed by two violins or two dessus de viole, or even by two transverse flutes, or by different combinations of these instruments.
