The manuscript – without a frontispiece – bears the title, probably added later, of "Pièces de viole avec la basse continue": in reality these are not "Pièces" but true sonatas for two viols. Although the first voice is decidedly soloistic, it is not possible to consider the second as a basso continuo, since the presence of some double stops and chords make it clearly violistic.
