The two settings are independent of each other; the one from ms Boynton even brings the aria from the original ternary in binary time.
The air «Sleep wayward thoughts», composed for 4 voices and lute, had been published as no. 13 in John Dowland, The First Booke of Songs or Ayres of fowre partes or either of them severally may be song to the Lute, Orpherian or Viol de gambo, London, 1597.
The same air is also found in a version for voice and lyra viol (see).
