«Sleep wayward thoughts» transcribed for voice and lyra viol
GB-Och ms. 439, p. 46
Garland (English Song 1600-1675: Facsimiles, vol. 6, part 1)
The original air «Sleep wayward thoughts», composed for 4 voices and lute, had been published as no. 13 in John Dowland, The First Booke of Songs or Ayres of fowre partes or either of them severally may be song to the Lute, Orpherian or Viol de gambo, London, 1597. The title indications therefore admit a performance for soprano and viola da gamba, but the edition does not provide a tablature for the viol.
Moreover, the manuscript contains some anonymous piece for lyra viol alone (see).
