The sonatas are known from the list of scores acquired by Johannes Kleinknecht on behalf of the Collegium Musicum in Ulm in the years 1725/26. The document is preserved in the Stadtarchiv Ulm, A [1995], 62 and published by Ulrich Schmid in Krause-Pichler, Adelheid, Jakob Friedrich Kleinknecht (1722-1794). Ein Komponist zwischen Barock und Klassik, Weißenborn, Konrad, 1991.
Presumably this is one of the collections of 6 sonatas for violin and bass by J. J. Kress, published in Darmstadt from about 1730 onwards. The ascription to the viola da gamba would then go back only to this source of Kleinknecht, a viola da gamba player as well as a violinist.
